What Is Theresa Doing Now?

Excellent question. Sometimes I ask myself the same thing.

I know I've been away for a bit, and I'm trying to be more present, get back into the habit of leaving the house, and—wild concept—performing in front of actual humans again. It's a work in progress. The couch remains a formidable opponent.

In the process of digging through old files, notebooks, random folders, and what can only be described as an archaeological excavation of my creative life, I unearthed a decade's worth of slam poetry that was never published.

A. Decade.

Apparently, I was writing a lot.

Looking back, I realized that for several years my style leaned heavily into social commentary. At the time, I figured many of those poems had a shelf life. You know, tied to specific events, specific politicians, specific moments in history. But then I started rereading poems written during the Bush years and had one of those deeply unsettling moments where you think, "Wait... why does this sound like it could have been written this morning?"

So that's both fascinating and mildly concerning.

Because of this accidental time capsule, I've started a new series called Poetry With the Angry Spoon on my YouTube channel. I'll also be posting the poems here. If I'm being completely honest, the project exists primarily because it entertains me. But if you happen to enjoy it too, then that's what professionals call a "two birds, one stone" situation.

A Poem for Suk Maya - 5-23-26

I've also come to the conclusion that I am carrying around a rather large case of The Sad™, which appears to be directly connected to repeatedly asking, "How on earth did we end up here?" while staring into the middle distance.

And after watching what's happening in the streets across the United States, I would just like to formally state: I better not ever hear anyone say women are too emotional for office again. Because damn.

The emotional support industries of this country appear to be largely powered by women quietly holding things together while certain very loud people have public tantrums with legislative consequences.

Anyway.

The poetry is back. I'm working on being back. There will be performances, videos, commentary, and probably the occasional existential side quest. Thank you for sticking around while I disappeared into the wilderness of life, old notebooks, and whatever timeline this is.

More soon.

—Theresa
